UN Missions: UNAMID and UNAMIS

 



 

UN HYBRID MISSION (UNAMID)

  •          Has nearly,  20,000 military personnel and more than 6,000 police officers

     

  •          Incorporates the existing AU Mission in Sudan (AMIS) which was deployed since 2004

     

  •          Is the largest peace-keeping force in the world

     

  •          By the end of the 2008, it was expected to take over operations from AMIS

     

  •          Is intended to
     

  • End fighting between rebel groups, Government forces, and allied Janjaweed Militias
     

  • Prevent problem from further spilling into neighboring Chad and cenral African Republic
     

  • Protect civilians and promote human rights
     

  • Support the “early and effective   implementation” of last year’s Darfur Peace Agreement between the Government and the rebels
     

  • Prevent armed attacks
     

  • Ensure the security of aid workers and its own personnel and facilities

     

UNAMIS- United Nations Mission in Sudan

  •          UNAMIS is tasked with supporting

  • The implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement
     

  • Facilitating the voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons
     

  • roviding demining assistance
     

  • Contributing towards international efforts to protect and promote human rights in Sudan

 

  •      It is authorized to have up to 10,000 military personnel and a civilian component, including 700
         civilian police personnel

     

  •      In addition, the Security Council emphasized that there can be no military solution to the conflict in
         Darfur










    Therefore, the UN called on the Government of the Sudan and the rebel groups, specifically the Justice and Equality Movement and the Sudanese Liberation Army/Movement, to resume the Abuja talks without preconditions to rapidly reach an agreement.
