Darfur Rehabilitation Project, Inc. (DRP) was formed to promote peace in Darfur and to unify the voices of Darfurians everywhere. DRP believes that a democratic, unified Sudan is the best hope for a peaceful, prosperous Sudan. DRP calls upon all Sudanese to work together to foster an inclusive Sudanese national identity; to build a democratic society that respects human rights and dignity; and to incorporate the diverse cultural heritage of all peoples of the country.
DRP bases its public statements and work on the following guiding principles:
- DRP endorses the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) and the Darfur-Darfur dialogue as a first step towards realizing peace in the region. DRP endorses the Abuja principles that guided the development of the DPA and believes these principles still provide a workable starting point for negotiating a comprehensive agreement that would cover all the Sudanese people, including Darfur; however, a majority of Darfurians apparently believe that the DPA falls short of solving the conflict in the region. The DPA must be revisited through a process that incorporates input from a cross-section of the Darfurian leadership. Unification of the diverse voices of Darfurians, including Darfurians within Sudan, in the Diaspora and in the refugee camps in neighboring countries is essential if a peace agreement is to be reached that will achieve reconciliation and secure a long-term peaceful coexistence. DRP is active in convening meetings of Darfurians and other Sudanese in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Gulf States, as well as with the warring parties in order to promote unity.
- Restoration of security to the region is essential before the peace process can begin. It is essential to bring sufficient peace and security to the area that will enable the community leaders and peacekeepers to move about freely enough to be able to participate fully in the peace process. Only then can the long-term process of reconstruction and rehabilitation begin. Further, DRP advocates peaceful solutions to the crisis and rejects violence of any kind. DRP calls upon all Darfurians to work together for the common good.
- DRP calls upon the international community to remain actively involved in facilitating and funding all processes that promote a sustainable peace in the region. This includes the dismantling of the Janjaweed and other militias, the restoration of security to all of Sudan, including the Darfur region, and the independent monitoring of human rights.
- DRP supports the prosecution of justice in international forums as a way to ensure that human rights abuses of this nature are not repeated in the future. The principle of rights for the victims of the violence in Darfur must be established and implemented. DRP believes the individuals responsible for the human rights atrocities in Darfur must be held accountable and brought to justice.
Once these near-term goals have been accomplished, a leadership from a democratic society will be vital in healing the wounds of war, permitting those displaced by the crisis to voluntarily return to their original home, promoting reconciliation and beginning the process of rebuilding the region. DRP remains committed in actively participating in the realization of these goals.
